After 40 years as program director, McKew stepped down last year, handing the reins to Caroline Moore, which means this year is the first Folkie McKew has been able to enjoy as a punter.
“I haven’t thought much about it, but I’m definitely seeing it more from the punter's point of view,” he said.
“I can spend more time at a concert and sit back – I can relax and enjoy a fantastic concert.”
McKew said Moore had done an excellent job in her first year in charge.
“It’s a real buzz to see everyone back here again and life goes on (at the Folkie) beautifully,” he said.
“With transition it’s always possible it will go awry but it worked out – I always knew Caroline would do a great job.”
But not being in charge was definitely a more enjoyable way to spend the Folkie, he said.
“I don’t miss missing everything – usually the weekend goes so quickly,” McKew said.
“(I used to) have many short conversations with people and see little pieces of the festival and kind of miss out on seeing that act I spent years getting to the festival.”
