We asked some of the Folkie performers to make some musical recommendations for you.
Jordan Lockett (Southern Ocean Sea Band)
Definitely Don Walker, and Paul Kelly & Charlie Owen, I’m very excited for that.
Shane Howard
The Southern Ocean Sea Band will be very timely because we just lost Danny Spooner and he was a big inspiration for them. Neil Murray – everyone should go see the Artist of the Year, so proud. Marlon Williams will be good. And Yirrmal and Gawurra, both from Arnhem Land. And Ewen Baker – I can’t leave him out!
Warren Williams (Buried Country)
I reckon Don Walker and Kutcha Edwards.
Fabian Acuna (Buckman Coe)
8FootFelix are mates of mine from Melbourne – they play really fun pirate music. Also Tek Tek Ensemble, Tash Sultana, and Dubmarine – I heard them on the radio, they’ve got a dub/reggae kind of vibe. Nhatty Man & Gara are really fun Ethiopian music.
Dobe Newton (The Bushwackers)
The Last Waltz Revisited will be amazing. Tash Sultana – who’s not a fan? She’ll be burnt out by the time she’s 25 but she will have conquered the world by then. And Mexrissey – a friend of mine saw them in Sydney and said they were absolutely amazing.
Leah Flanagan (Buried Country)
Cookin’ On 3 Burners, they recently went #1 in Europe. The Wilson Pickers are great, they’re so fun. And you’ve gotta love Dog Trumpet.
Luke Daniel Peacock (Buried Country)
Mick Thomas is always a pleasure, as well as The Wilson Pickers, Charles Jenkins, and Mexrissey.
Kate Gane (Southern Ocean Sea Band)
Sarah Carroll is one of my favourites. She used to be in Git, who were Port Fairy regulars. Deborah Conway – she’s amazing, she’s a legend. Eddi Reader is great, I saw her years ago. And I love Marlon Williams.
Derek Guille (The Ugly Uncles)
Paul Kelly’s last record has been on high rotation at our place, so Paul Kelly and Charlie Owen together is a match made in heaven. Also the mostly Irish band Young Folk and Eddi Reader. But everything is great – you can’t be disappointed.
