Especially two-year-olds who are far more fragile than older and more robust racehorses, where small nicks and cuts and even a lack of appetite are vital signs of a youngster coming to the end of its preparation.

Happily for trainer David Hayes and his partner's son, Ben, and nephew, Tom Dabernig, this is rarely a problem with Blue Diamond winner Catchy.

The quickly-arranged Hayes family party post the Blue Diamond Stakes went perfectly with news that their all-conquering two-year-old Catchy, had returned home hours after her freakish Blue Diamond success and licked her bin out.

"That's never been a problem for her, she's got a ferocious appetite and her bin every morning and night is licked clean. She's got an extraordinary pair of lungs on her and she considers every time she goes to the races she treats it as a day at work," Hayes said.

Catchy, on Saturday, came from a near impossible position to win the Blue Diamond and in doing so became a realistic threat of bringing the Golden Slipper home to Hayes' property at Euroa.

"We never fear about after race problems with Catchy. She does everything we ask her, she never leaves an oat and most importantly raceday doesn't upset her in the slightest," said Hayes.

"She's now won four races all by no more than a half-length margin. And that translates into a very, very good racehorse who only spends her energy when it's needed," he said.

However, Golden Slipper plans for Catchy and stablemate, Formality, are far from afterthoughts at Lindsay Park.

Hayes introduced a training regime in late January aimed at the Slipper, with all candidates doing a majority of work in the Sydney direction.

Hayes has had too much heartburn in Golden Slippers having had five seconds and just one win with Miss Finland so the trainer is fully aware of what can go wrong.

"I've run five seconds in the Golden Slipper, so to eradicate one possible problem is teaching these young horses to work and gallop the Sydney way.

"And Catchy's taken to it as she does to everything in her make-up, and that's perfectly," he said.

Hayes has always been guarded at making lofty comparisons with any racehorse when it comes to Miss Finland, a mare Hayes considers one of the most outstanding athletic thoroughbreds to come into his training establishment.

However, hours after Catchy's remarkable win, the trainer who was enjoying his sixth Diamond success, conceded there were now comparisons to be made with the two females.

"Now she's got that group 1 under her belt we can indeed allow ourselves to make parallels with Miss Finland and now Catchy," he said.

While Hayes confirmed Formality would head to Rosehill with Catchy for the Slipper, he was unsure what other members of his elite two-year-old team would follow.

"Formality will certainly go to the Slipper and we'll look for black type races for Tulip, but of the others I'll just wait and see," he said.
