The Pacific Eden ship was forced to make the unscheduled visit due to poor weather conditions preventing it from reaching Kangaroo Island.
Glenelg Shire Council spokeswoman Liz McKinnon gave credit to people in the community for putting their hands up to cater to visitors hailing from the US, Canada and Asia.
“We’ve got about 30-plus volunteers helping with logistics, and there’s more than 20 market stall-holders,” Ms McKinnon said.
“We have six shuttle buses running and there’s local tours being operated – two operators whipped up last-minute tours.”
Ms McKinnon said she hoped the city making the most of the impromptu visit raised the profile of Portland as a “must-see” cruise ship destination.
