The Glenelg Hopkins Catchment Management Authority’s Funds for Fish crowd-funding campaign aims to raise $12,000 for a range of fish “hotel” habitats to help lift the numbers of Estuary Perch that presently have limited habitat in the Merri.
The project also aims to improve access to the Merri’s river banks for anglers and the community.
Donations are fully tax deductible through the Australian River Restoration Centre and the GHCMA will give a matching contribution to the amount raised.
The campaign has received a big boost with $1000 donations from both Reeves Bakery and Adz Weld Fabrications.
Ninety-one anglers from the Shipwreck Coast Fishing Classic also contributed funds to the project.
Funds for Fish spokesman Adam Bester said the project gave people the chance to directly invest in a positive transformation of the Merri River.
One of the fish hotels to be placed in the Merri will be on display at Saturday’s Sustainable Living Festival on the Civic Green.
People will have the chance to donate to the crowd funding campaign at the festival. To find out more, go to the Big Fish Hotel Project on fundsforfish.pozible.com/project/warrnambool-big-fish-hotels
