The 18-year-old, who joined the Gardens Oval club where family friend Marcia Forrest is recruiting officer, is keen to mix things up with stints through the attacking half after playing predominantly through wing defence at her former club North Warrnambool Eagles.
She revelled in the chance to play centre and wing attack in state league and representative games in the past, and has been given the opportunity to switch through different roles at preseason training at her new club.
“I love the quickness of it and helping the goalies, working a bit more with other players rather than just focusing one – the one you’re playing on,” Lafferty said.
“(At training) I’ve also been in defence and goal attack, which has been really good.”
Lafferty said Port Fairy had been accommodating as she juggled preparations for the Victorian track and field championships in early March.
The 2015 premiership player said the Seagulls were starting strong as they look to defend their maiden open grade flag.
“It’s really clear to see they’ve all played together before and they all have the exact same goal, and that’s really to make finals and get into another grand final,” she said.
Forrest said Lafferty’s ability will be a valuable addition to the group.
“Her fitness is at a high level and watching her on the training track, she just absolutely shines,” the recruiting officer said.
