Westpac business bank chief executive David Lindberg told Westpac’s brunch for clients that Mr Trump was “breaking all the rules, particularly for trade”.
Mr Trump has scrapped the proposed Trans Pacific Partnership that advocated free trade between the United States, Australia and other countries in a move seen as a bid to protect American manufacturing.
Mr Lindberg said Australia needed trade and it should be remembered the biggest “single commodity being traded is people”, he said.
Mr Lindberg also said he feared the Australian government was losing connection with rural and remote areas where it needed to invest more in infrastructure such as the NBN.
