Headed by Cameron Williams, who blasted 87 runs to help his side to victory over Ballarat on Thursday, the association will also be buoyed by the form of four-wicket hero Jimmy Elford and utility batsman Tom Batten.
Elford, the Warrnambool and District Cricket Association’s leading wicket taker, said it was a “massive honour” to reach the final of the prestigious tournament.
“With this team, you know that everybody is good at what they’re doing. You know that everybody is going to do their job and do what has to be done,” he said.
“We’ve had some unreal single performances and the team efforts have been amazing. It’s a massive honour to play here.”
The 20-year-old said he didn’t expect to bowl in Warrnambool’s rout of Ballarat due to poor form earlier in the week and took advantage of favourable pitch conditions to snare four scalps.
“I had a poor start to the week, so I felt like I was going in as more of a lower-order batsman to hit some runs at the end of an innings,” Elford said.
“I think the pitch definitely suited my style of bowling a bit. The work Kory (Howlett) and Kyle (Humphrys) did through the middle of the game in taking wickets made my job easier at the end.
“I think their batsmen panicked a bit when I came on and thought they needed to hit some more runs quickly because they’d been restricted so well. It helped me a lot.”
He lauded the batting efforts of Williams but implored his home-club captain to go on to make another big score in the grand final.
“From what I have heard from everybody, country week is usually a big week for him,” Elford said.
“I think he prefers the ball coming on a little bit and up here, the pitches are all flat roads.
“He’s just dominating. He never looks like going out until he is in the 70s and even that is a bit frustrating. I’d love to see him go on to get a century, but hopefully he can on Friday.” Warrnambool will take on Geelong at Albert Cricket Ground.
