Koroit police were called to two incidents related to fires within and on the outskirts of the town.
A resident reported smelling burning timber about midnight on Monday.
On inspection, the resident found timber beams on a vacant block next to their house in King Street had been burnt.
Sergeant Pat Day of Koroit said the vacant block backed onto Victoria Park.
“We believe that this is most likely local youths experimenting with aerosol cans,” Sergeant Day said.
“It is extremely reckless and dangerous considering the fire restrictions and also the potential for a can to explode.
“We would urge anyone with information to contact Koroit police or Crime Stoppers and report any suspicious behaviour straight away to Triple-0.”
In other police news, a Kirkstall man, 45, will be summoned to appear in court after setting fire to a pile of branches and then leaving it unattended.
Kirkstall firefighters attended the scene, along with Koroit police, after smoke was seen at the man’s property. The owner couldn’t be located but was spoken to the next day.
Sergeant Day said the owner would be charged with lighting a fire and leaving it unattended during a period of fire restrictions.
In Moyne Shire, fire restrictions were introduced on December 19 and will end on May 1. These restrictions mean no residents can burn-off within the shire without a permit.
The council can issue permits and failure to comply with conditions will result in heavy fines.
