The women’s section played through to the grand final, with the Dennington combination of Maureen Drennan and Sheridan Barling taking the honours over Lyn Harris and Sue Hamilton from Port Fairy.
The men’s section completed their semi-final matches, with Trevor Bolden and Laurie McLaren’s Warrnambool combo defeating Timboon’s Brett Mungean and Peter Barker.
Warrnambool’s Peter Pangrazio and Mark Bowles got the better of City’s Tim Jackway and Ken Bell. This sets up an all-Warrnambool final at a date to be fixed.
The WDBD championship triples will be staged next Sunday at Dennington Bowls Club.
Round seven of Tuesday pennant – marking the halfway mark of the season – sees the top four teams of City Gold, Koroit Orange, City Green and Warrnambool Gold occupy the top four. Upsets in next week’s final hitout before the Christmas break seem unlikely.
Saturday pennant resumes this weekend. Warrnambool Gold, Koroit Blue and City Red have a stranglehold on the top three positions. Timboon Gold will be looking to consolidate fourth when it hosts Port Fairy Red. City Gold and Dennington Red will clash, both hoping to stay in contention, and it’s probably do-or-die for Terang Green, hosting second-placed Koroit Blue.
This week marks the final chapter of the feature clubs. Last but far from least is Warrnambool Bowls Club.
Founded in 1890, the club is located in downtown Timor Street. The club has 228 bowling members. In Saturday pennant, it fields three sides in division one, two in division two and two in division three. Tuesday Pennant fields sides in division one and two. Social bowls are played on Wednesdays and Fridays.
Warrnambool hosts two of the biggest events on the bowls calendar – the Australia Day ladies pairs and the $20.000 Autumn Classic.
Facilities include two synthetic greens, a bistro, members bar, gaming room and the luxury of a full-time bowls manager.
Warrnambool has been a powerhouse of the competition for many years and has many luminaries, including two of the greats of the game in John Leishman and Kevin Boyd. However, when you have an Australian luminary on your honour boards by the name of Dennis Dalton, the decision is made.
Dalton won the club singles coupled with the champion of champions title on nine occasions, once progressing to win the state champion of champions. He left Warrnambool to pursue a professional bowling career and is regarded as one Australia’s greats.
He is now retired from bowls and living in NSW, but his resume includes representing Victoria on 229 occasions. He also represented Australia and won 50 major tournaments and Commonwealth Games medals.
