Sergeant Paul Stanhope said there was an intervention order in place involving a man aged in his mid 50s and the complainant.
The man has prior court appearances for offences involving violence in the past 10 years.
"The allegations is that the man poured fuel over a paved area at a Coleraine property, then started smoking a cigarette and threatened to set the home on fire," he said.
"He's just gone into an interview now. He could be charged and if so would appear before a bail justice this morning," he said.
"The incident happened during the late evening. We were notified about 11pm. Negotiations took place about 3am and he soon after arrived at the Hamilton police station," he said.
