Perth's most dominant owner-breeder hasn't snared one of the two group 1s already run, but on Saturday Peters is giving himself every chance of success.

He will have four starters in the $1 million Kingston Town Classic and that will include Perfect Reflection, a $4 favourite and drawn from barrier two, so it may well be a case of third time lucky at Ascot on Saturday.

Back in contention

Leading trainer David Hayes, who has had past success in the Kingston Town Classic, is imploring followers of his horse He or She not to give up on the six-year-old.

An inglorious performance in the Railway Stakes has made He or She one of the outsiders for the $1 million classic, yet Hayes is confident of an improved showing.

"He was ridden too close in the Railway. It's like running a little boy in an 800-metre race and making him run the first 100 flat out.

"He'll be ridden back this time and don't rule him out as a genuine chance."

Star showing

Stratum Star is one of the main Victorian hopes in the Kingston Town Classic.

Five-year-old stallion Stratum Star showed at Sandown that he was back to his best with a brave second and, according to the stable, the horse has been set for Saturday's classic.

Travelling trainers around Australia always claim that visiting horses get a raw deal when it comes to barrier draws but not so for Darren Weir with Stratum Star coming up with barrier one.

Versatile Pilote

Hayes says his imported stayer Pilote D'essai, who led throughout to win the Ballarat Cup, doesn't necessarily have to lead to be victorious.

Pilote D'essai comes into Saturday's Pakenham Cup with an excellent chance following his gritty Ballarat Cup win but the trainer maintains: "He doesn't have to lead, he can just be ridden according to the tempo. Actually, he's won two races for me: one from first, and one from last so he's got a bit of versatility on his side."

Unhappy state

With Michelle Payne unable to ride at Rosehill on Saturday for her brother Patrick Payne following the NSW ruling that jockeys with dual training-riding licences are not permitted to ride in that state, Michael Dee is aboard Husson Eagle in the Starlight Stakes at Rosehill.

Payne won't be anywhere near Sydney on Saturday as she will be riding Streetwise Savoire, also trained by Patrick Payne, in the Insurance Handicap at Morphettville in South Australia.

40-year commitment

Tasmanian horsewoman Jenny Watson has won the thoroughbred excellence award at the 2016 Australian Godolphin stud and stable staff awards announced at Moonee Valley on Friday night.

A breeder of the Darren Weir-trained group one winner Palentino, who won the Makybe Diva Stakes in the last spring carnival, she was nominated for her 40 years of commitment to the breeding industry around Australia, and particularly for her work as foaling supervisor at Armidale Stud in northern Tasmania.

"I find it absolutely amazing that I could receive this just for doing something I love and that I'm passionate about," she said.

Armidale Stud proprietors Robyn Whishaw said Watson was an essential component of the business.

"Jenny has delivered countless foals at our farm ... her dedication and attention to detail can make the difference between life and death for mares and their foals."

Ian Brady, the stud manager at Wattle Brae Stud in Queensland, was the winner of the leadership award, while Gerry Ryan, stallion manager at Coolmore Stud in the Hunter Valley, won the horsemanship award.
