If you speed or drink and drive this weekend, you’re in their sights.
Warrnambool Highway Patrol Sergeant Dean Greenwood said there was a statewide operation which kicked off on Thursday.
Sergeant Greenwood said the major focus of Operation Scorecard would be speed, fatigue, impaired driving, driver distraction and seatbelt compliance.
He urged people enjoying a few alcoholic beverages while watching the grand final to plan ahead.
“Think ahead and don’t drive – have a designated driver or use a taxi,” Sergeant Green said.
“Don’t drive, it’s not worth it, it could cost your job or worse, it could cost someone’s life.”
Sergeant Green also urged motorists to take care on the roads following the recent rainfall.
“Due to the recent heavy rains there are a lot of trees down,” he said.
“Drive to the conditions.”
Colac police Sergeant Tim Kerrison is preparing for a busy weekend.
“Over the long weekend we expect an increase in traffic and unfortunately that ties in with poor road conditions. We’ve got really difficult driving conditions and a lot of our roads are showing excessive signs of wear.”
Sergeant Kerrison said this included water lying on the side of the road and potholes.
“You name it – expect it this weekend,” he said.
“We’re appealing to all drivers to leave well in advance of their required arrival time,” Sergeant Kerrison said.
“Expect hazards on the road – water laying on the road, potholes, trees and branches”
Hamilton police Inspector Nick Finnegan urged motorists to take regular breaks while travelling.
“All the rain we’ve had over the last few weeks has impacted the condition of the roads, so drive to the conditions,” he said.
Road Policing Assistant Commissioner Debra Robertson said police and the community needed to work together to meet the goal of zero deaths on the state’s roads on the weekend.
“Three people were killed and more than 150 people were injured on Victoria roads during last year’s AFL Grand Final long weekend,” Ms Robertson said.
“No matter if you are barracking for the Bulldogs or Swans this weekend, I ask that you enjoy the weekend safely.”
