Warrnambool Tooram Cub Scouts Ben Winnell, Sam Lukeis, Josh McDonald and Brayden McDonald have donated hours of their time to Warrnambool’s Meals on Wheels program.
Ben, Sam and Josh said they were on their way to achieving the highest Cub award – the Grey Wolf – with community service playing a big role in the challenge.
It’s important because you make their day
- Ben Winnell
“It’s the hardest award to get before scouts,” they said.
With Josh’s help, the boys have worked to pack and deliver the meals to people in Warrnambool who “might not have anyone”.
“Sometimes you’re the only person they’ll see all day,” Ben said. “It’s important because you make their day.”
Ben said one resident had waited for the boys to arrival to have someone to talk to.
Group leader Sue Marsh said the boys were learning “what it’s like to be a part of a community and to help others”.
“They’re all really great kids,” she said.
In addition to raising money for the Royal Children’s Hospital and cooking on an open fire, the boys have also mastered first aid and are helping other Cubs to learn the same life-saving skills.
