Last Wednesday at 9.30am, about 19 kilometres out to sea, Mr Hoey spent an hour and 20 minutes grappling with an 118.3 kilogram southern bluefin tuna before getting it into his boat.
“It was a bit of a struggle, being such a big fish,” he said.
“I’ve caught a couple around that size but nothing like that on my own.”
Mr Hoey, who has been fishing since he was a toddler and runs his own chartering business, said he was proud of his catch.
“It’s a milestone to be able to do something like that,” Mr Hoey said.
“It’s something I’m happy to have achieved.”
