Canberra's Olympians and a host of stars, including gold medallists Kim Brennan, Sharni Williams, Chloe Esposito and Catherine Skinner and Cate and Bronte Campbell will attend the final leg of their national tour in the capital on Monday.

There will be no official parade but the athletes will attend function at Giralang Primary School and make hospital visits before a reception at the National Museum.

Their arrival comes as long-standing ACT Olympic Committee president Robin Poke prepares to step down after 11 years in the role and being a part of the council since 1992.

The Canberra contingent of athletes from the Rio Olympic Games will return home to visit family and friends and 100 metre sprinter Breen has returned to training after her second campaign.

Breen, a two-time Olympian, was the only Australian in the men's or women's marquee track and field event, but said she wouldn't dwell on not making it out of the heats.

Breen spent six months chasing an Olympic qualifying time and she has a burning desire to compete at the top for as long as possible.

"I hope that [my challenging year] inspires people to never give up on their dreams," Breen said.

"At times I didn't think it was going to happy for me but I'm really grateful that I got the chance to compete at the Olympics again.

"You'd love to make semis or finals to win a medal, but I always say everyone's gold medal is different. For me it was making the Olympics and proudly representing Australia.

"It's not over yet, I hope to keep running for another eight years, that's the goal. Getting to a third Olympics is something I aspire to and not many athletes have gone to four [Olympics]."

There were 31 athletes with links to Canberra at the Rio Games, led by gold-medal winning rower Brennan.

Wells was the Australian athletics vice-captain and was competing at her second Olympics. She will be the star attraction at the welcome home event given she works at Giralang.

Wells is still weighing up what her athletics future will be and has flagged the possibility of ending her career at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

"I'm certainly not done on the track and there's no way I could leave my career the way I did in Rio," Wells said.

"I'm still proud of what I achieved but it certainly wasn't my best out there and I still have that feeling I can run faster. That's my driving force. I'm not making any commitments to the season or hurdling in the future.

"But I'm certainly looking to the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in 2018 as probably my last hurrah. It would be a nice way to bookend my career – starting with a home Commonwealth Games in 2006 and finishing on the Gold Coast."

Some of the other athletes who will be welcomed to Canberra as the last stop of a national tour will be Lisa Darmanin​, Jason Waterhouse, Annabel Smith, Maddison Keeney.
