The state government said the national park, near Macarthur, formed part of the Budj Bim National Heritage Landscape area. It said a world heritage nomination was being prepared for the Budj Bim area that would highlight its significant Aboriginal cultural values.
The government said Parks Victoria’s recent south-west planning process showed strong community support for changing the national park name to Budj Bim, and the local Budj Bim land management council had also recommended the re-naming.
Denise Lovett, chairperson of the Gunditj Mirring Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation that is part of the Budj Bim council, said Budj Bim (meaning high head) was part of the ancestral creation-being’s body.
Parks Victoria will lead the community consultation, in partnership with the Gunditj Mirring Traditional Owners.
