Portland police Detective Sergeant Jason von Tunk said two police officers – Senior Constable Ash Rawlings and Senior Constable Tom Dempsey – were on mobile patrol when they saw smoke coming from a house at the intersection of Flinders and Dutton streets.
"When they arrived, the garage was on fire and they heard screaming from the house," he said.
"Senior Constable Rawlings went through the garage, which was fully engulfed by fire. The garage contained gas bottles. He went to the back door of the home, forced entry through the door and entered the home. It was full of smoke. Visibility was almost zero."
Detective Sergeant von Tunk said the police officer saved the woman, who had become disorientated, about 10am Thursday.
"It was an incredibly brave thing to do. It was very fortunate no-one was injured,” he said.
The two police officers and the woman were taken to Portland hospital and treated for smoke inhalation.
Detective Sergeant von Tunk said investigations revealed the fire was deliberately lit in two places.
Police have charged a Portland man, 25, with arson and serious assault-related offences.
The man was bailed to appear in court on October 18.
"Police will allege this is a family violence issue," Detective Sergeant von Tunk said.
