Lynden Hobbs, 59, previously of Neylon Street, appeared in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court for a contest mention hearing ​on Monday.

He was ​charged with driving in a manner dangerous and breaching an intervention order.

Police said a couple had employed Mr Hobbs in September as a farm hand.

He was given permission to live in a house the couple owned on the Lavers Hill-Cobden Road at Jancourt East.

The woman lived next door and owns both properties and more than 500 hectares of land.

A $600 bond and weekly rent of $150 was agreed upon but after 11 days Mr Hobbs’ employment was terminated and he was asked to leave.

He left a shipping container holding his belongings and two cats at the farmhouse.

Mr Hobbs was living ​in his car ​at the Cobden Golf Club car park but returned to the farmhouse almost daily to feed the cats.

The woman asked him to leave at 6.20pm on March 11 when she saw him back at the property.

He told her he “would do what he had to”.

Police allege Mr Hobbs reversed his vehicle at the woman at a high speed about 15 minutes later. The woman was on a quad bike​.​

The woman was granted an intervention order on April 15 that banned Mr Hobbs from being near the woman's home or workplace.

Mr Hobbs returned to the farmhouse for two days to feed the cats and the woman reported him to police.

Solicitor Ian Pugh said his client claimed he had not breached the intervention order and the police view was not a reasonable interpretation of the order.

Magistrate Michael Colan said he didn't understand the basis of the defence and that it had taken the landowner six months to remove Mr Hobbs from the property.

He said if Mr Hobbs pleaded guilty, he would be fined and lose his driver's licence for six months.

After a brief adjournment to consult with his client, Mr Pugh sacked himself as Mr Hobbs' lawyer. 

Mr Hobbs ​then ​entered not guilty pleas and a contested hearing was ​scheduled for August 11.
