Warrnambool City councillors Peter Sycopoulis, Peter Hulin and Brian Kelson have invited all current candidates and prospective candidates join them at the pedestrian crossing in Liebig Street from 10.30am to noon on Saturday, July 30 to participate in the Councillors on Duty initiative.
“We think it would not only be a great opportunity for community members to meet the candidates in an informal and relaxed atmosphere but also an excellent way for the candidates to experience first-hand what the community expects of them,” Councillor Sycopoulis said.
The idea for Councillors on Duty was originally implemented by councillor Peter Hulin and former councillor Jennifer Lowe in 2008.
Ms Lowe has indicated she will stand for election on council this year.
Over the past eight years Councillor Hulin has been joined by Councillor Kelson and by Councillor Sycopoulis when his work commitments allowed him.
“We believe we are the only councillors in Australia who have adopted this particular style of direct communication with their constituents on weekends when everyone is a bit more relaxed,” Councillor Sycopoulis said.
“The driving force behind Councillors on Duty was to give direct access between councillors and the community and this has proved to be an invaluable means for participating councillors to gain an insight into the concerns of the residents.”
