The company blamed the disruption on a hardware issue in its wholesale provider’s local exchange and technicians worked to restore the service overnight.
The service outage had a negative impact on a number of business owners and residents.
The owner of Warrnambool’s Scotty’s Seafood, Scotty Buck, said the shop had to turn down 10-15 customers because their EFTPOS machine had not worked all day.
Mr Buck said this probably cost the business hundreds of dollars in lost orders.
Some people were reporting a loss of service since Wednesday.
An Optus spokesperson apologised to customers and said compensation requests would be considered on a case-by-case basis, and that affected customers should get in touch on 1300 300 937.
