Mr Barling said a Labor government would establish a universal perinatal depression screening program for every expectant woman and new mother across Australia.
He said Labor would encourage private medical practitioners to adopt screening as a key element of a woman’s perinatal care.
Mr Barling said Labor would also triple the number of young carers who would get access to the Young Carer Bursary Program.
The program supports young carers to complete their education by providing grants of up to $3000.
Mr Barling said Labor recognised the enormous responsibility borne by young carers.
He said Labor had listened to the concerns of young carers and developed a plan for another 600 to get access to extra support to manage their work, study and care responsibilities.
