Koroit police Sergeant Pat Day said the driver of the white Mazda sedan collided with the right rear section of the bus at about 4.15pm.
The bus was carrying 16 school children on their way home.
It was travelling along the Mailors Flat-Koroit Road and attempting to turn into the Yarpturk School Road when the accident happened.
The elderly driver had been following the bus.
Sergeant Day said the sedan driver failed to see that the bus was turning.
The elderly man sustained non life-threatening head injuries and was taken to Warrnambool Base Hospital for assessment and treatment.
The 16 school children and the bus driver were not injured.
"All the kids were collected by their parents and went home. The road was blocked for a fair amount of time while the accident scene was cleared," Sergeant Day said.
"Everyone seems to have been pretty fortunate. Police are continuing to investigate the cause of the accident," he said.
