Corangamite Shire has identified funding for the Twelve Apostles Trail, Princes Highway upgrades and ongoing support for dairy as among the regional priorities requiring funding commitments from Wannon candidates.
Mayor Jo Beard said the shire was now working to meet with candidates in the election lead-up.
“Our council believes it is important to engage with all sides of politics and over the coming weeks I will be looking to meet with all of the candidates to advocate for projects and issues that are important to us,” she said.
Cr Beard said $15 million was needed for the Twelve Apostles Trail, with detailed planning already complete for the project.
“The trail will provide walking and cycling access from Timboon and Port Campbell to the Twelve Apostles,” she said.
“We would really like to see this project funded. Not only will it provide another way for visitors to appreciate our coastline and give them a reason to stay longer, but importantly, it will benefit residents linking Timboon and Port Campbell to the National Park via a safe cycling and walking path.”
Other priorities are:
- $15 million towards high priority projects outlined in the Shipwreck Coast Master Plan, such as improvements to the Twelve Apostles visitor centre and Port Campbell streetscape
- $150,000 for the final stage of Terang streetscape
- Continued funding and support for the dairy sector and small businesses and communities impacted by the cuts to farm gate milk prices
- Inclusion of Princes Highway West on the National Land Transport Network and funding for improvements from Colac to the South Australian border
- Long-term extension of the federal government’s Roads to Recovery Program
- A migration growth project for regional Australia
- New business and job creation support
