Port Fairy Consolidated School and St Patrick’s Primary School students attended the first Victorian Opera (VO) masterclass on Tuesday.
Port Fairy Consolidated School choir mistress Lynda Beekhof said it was a brilliant opportunity for the 40 students.
“It was great,” Mrs Beekhof said. “The kids were enthusiastic.”
VO artistic director Richard Mills rewrote the story in an enchanting new family production which includes a surprise happy ending.
The students learnt their respective choruses, playing the roles of rats and children in the operatic version of the tale.
Mrs Beekhof said students from both schools would rehearse together and VO representatives would return to fine tune the performance in the festival lead up. The short opera will be staged in Port Fairy on October 9.
