The star forward, who kicked nine goals in the Magpies’ win over Port Fairy, also ruptured a lateral ligament in the incident, which occurred in the final 10 seconds of Saturday’s match.
“I jumped up for a mark and as I landed my boot dug into the ground and my body weight went over the top of it,” he said.
“I didn’t think it was too bad to start with.”
Camperdown had been hopeful the damage would not be too serious when Bain was tested at the ground, with better movement than typically expected from an ACL injury.
But scans confirmed the worst.
The 23-year-old had been in sensational form for the Magpies, sitting atop of the league’s goalkicking tally with 23 majors, six clear of Hamilton Kangaroos recruit Paul Cox.
Bain will return to his home state Queensland to undergo his knee reconstruction, and stay there to be nearer his parents during his recovery.
But he has flagged a desire to return to Camperdown when he is fit and firing again.
“I’ve really enjoyed my time. I wouldn’t see why I wouldn’t come back,” he said.
“The team has taken me in and treated me like family.”
Magpies coach Phil Carse said the group was “pretty devastated” to lose Bain.
