HOT TIP: Apparently Port Fairy-born champion jockey and trainer Pat Hyland will finally have his outstanding deeds recognised at the upcoming Australian Racing Hall of Fame inductions. The induction follows hot on the heels of his late great mate Jim Moloney who was inducted last year. The function is to be held in Adelaide on May 20.

BUSY: Warrnambool trainers enjoy the big carnival but Daniel Bowman will be looking for a place to lay down come Sunday. Bowman had one runner on Tuesday, three Wednesday and two on the final day before heading to Bendigo with two on Friday and one at Flemington Saturday.
HAPPY: Former Warrnambool Racing Club chairman Margaret Lucas could not contain her excitement after Princess Lou Ling won a maiden plate. The lightly-raced mare is trained by young Crossley trainer Mitch Freedman who was hugged by Lucas following the victory. Lucas told the waiting media throng: "I love to hug young boys”.
GREAT EFFORT: Local Frank Beattie celebrated his 50th year as a steward at the Warrnambool carnival yesterday. The popular steward was seen out with good mates Des Gleeson and Ray Murrihy enjoying a celebration meal to mark the occasion on Tuesday night.
PROUD: A quiet bystander at yesterday's opening day was Noelene Weir, mother of Victoria's leading trainer Darren Weir. Noelene was trackside with her grandson, young racecaller Dayne Barry, after making the five-hour trip from Swan Hill. She revealed it was only her second Warrnambool carnival. Her son trained four of the first seven winners.
DOWN: Warrnambool's bleak weather kept some patrons away – 5338 people came through the gates, down 600 from 2015.
