They produced a dominant performance to down Mildura Heat 93-75 at the Arc on Saturday night before suffering a 103-95 overtime loss to Sunbury Jets on the road on Sunday afternoon.
The Seahawks lost boom recruit Alex Gynes, who scored 25 points against the Heat, to injury for the away match, robbing them of much-needed height in the key.
Warrnambool coach Matt Alexander said Gynes’ absence hurt.
“We would have liked to have got two wins but considering we didn’t have Alex in the second game, we were happy we at least came a draw and that our effort in the second half was fantastic,” he said.
Gynes, Adelaide 36ers-listed Nathan Sobey and American import Xavier Johnson-Blount were the stars against the Heat.
Sobey drained a game-high 37 points and reeled in 13 rebounds, while Johnson-Blount’s 22 points and 10 boards complemented his his defensive efforts on Mildura jet Decorey Jones. Jones was limited to three points.
“He’s been great for us. He shoots at a high percentage and is a good team guy,” Alexander said.
“He played amazing defence and shut their best player down.”
Seahawks veteran Tim Gainey led the Seahawks’ revival – they were nine points down at half-time – against the Jets.
Gainey sunk 24 points and had 10 rebounds.
Sobey (34 points) and Johnson-Blount (25) were also influential, while James Mitchell and Josh Dean stood tall defensively.
“I was proud of them – they came back and had a red-hot crack,” Alexander said.
“Tim played so well. He stepped up and showed the match-winning plays we know he has.”
Warrnambool hosts Melton and Melbourne University in a double-header at the Arc next weekend.
