Heading into Saturday’s away match against South Warrnambool, the Bombers were yet to open their account for the season, but a dominant second half saw them turn a two-goal half-time lead into a 44-20 win.
Bombers coach Nadine McNamara said the win showed what her side is capable of when it puts in a four-quarter effort.
“It’s great to see our hard work paying off,” she said.
“(I told the girls) to get out there and push it our for four quarters – we’ve probably lacked playing four quarters in the past couple of weeks.
“I really wanted to show that we are a quality side and that we can take it to the best teams if we do play four quarters.”
On a hot, blustery day, the goalers’ job was always going to be difficult, but with both teams’ defensive ends putting on a sterling display, each and every goal was hard-earned.
Scores were locked on eight apiece in the first term, before Cobden edged in front in the second.
But with both sides making changes at half-time, the flow of the game shifted dramatically in the third quarter.
Cobden piled on 17 goals to three to effectively end the contest, and finished with 11 goals to three in the last to extend the final margin to 24.
“Midway through the (third) quarter, there was a couple of runs in goals – I think we got five or six goals (in a row) – and the confidence started building,” McNamara said.
“When the girls are playing with confidence, you know they’re going to play well.”
McNamara said she was happy with how goalers Molly Hutt (28 goals), Tegan McNamara (23) and Natalie Tongs (three) stood up to the pressure from South Warrnambool pair Ally and Genevieve O’Connor.
At the other end of the court, the coach and Remeny McCann put in strong performances.
“Remeny McCann had a fantastic game – I think she intercepted 10 balls in the first half, so that’s fantastic to see from a goal defence,” McNamara said.
South Warrnambool coach Moira Thornton said the Roosters would make working on their possession a priority ahead of next week’s clash with Warrnambool, saying simple turnovers let them down in the third quarter.
But she praised the efforts of her defenders throughout the game.
“They were repelling and they were doing double the work, because it just kept coming back at them,” she said.
