South West Local Learning and Employment Network (LLEN) backed Deakin as the best tertiary education provider for the region, but criticised the university’s consultation process.
Chairman Mike Holland has been following the issue while on holidays and said Deakin has always promised to sustain the Warrnambool campus and has a commitment to rural and regional as part of its charter.
“To abandon that commitment would be unforgivable and the federal government must not allow it to happen,” he said.
Mr Holland said the committee appointed to guide the local response must target retention of Deakin as its top priority.
