Children happily get wet and dirty in the hands-on program, which combines nature-based learning, discovery play, well- being and creativity.
The program, Puddle Jumpers is based on a bush-kinder model, which promotes outdoor learning and field trips.
One of the teachers, Daneel Robinson said it was important to allow children to be themselves.
“Life is way too stressful for children. What happened to getting dirty and having fun? That’s when curiosity and learning happen, Ms Robinson said.
She said the bush kinder model equipped children with problem-solving skills, resilience and greater self awareness and self regulation.
The three-year-old children in the Port Fairy-based program engage their senses, use their imagination and creativity while learning about themselves, others and the world around them.
Ms Robinson said the connection between body, mind and emotion was important for healthy development and the children had learnt about mindfulness, breathing and yoga.
“It’s amazing what they can learn at that age when you give them that safety and space. They absolutely love it,” she said.
Term two sessions will focus on the bush and biodiversity. Areas will include music, movement, stories, gardening and indigenous learning.
Three qualified primary school teachers take the sessions including Ms Robinson, Tracey Gray and Peita Cryer.
“Tracey and I wanted to give children the experience of playing outdoors and discovery play,” Ms Robinson said.
“It’s about kids engaging with themselves, engaging with the environment.
“The families that we have here are really enjoying it and celebrating it,” she said.
The program is inspired by five learning stones - voice, trust, friendship, respect, care and love.
Puddle Jumpers is based at the Port Fairy Community House and places are available for term two. Families living outside Port Fairy are also welcome to join.
