Soon their heads will lose their hair, as they shave their locks off in support of schoolmate Tim O’Brien, who has been diagnosed with testicular cancer.
On Thursday night about 9pm Lachie and Jacob, both 17, launched a crowdfunding page to raise money to cover some medical and travel costs for Tim,18, and his family.
Within less than 24 hours more than $8000 had been raised.
Tim said he had been completely overwhelmed with the outpouring of support he had received since his diagnosis two weeks ago.
“I found out that I had cancer after a groin injury,” the talented footballer said.
“I started treatment last Monday at the Peter Mac Centre in Melbourne. I will have treatment every Monday for 12 weeks and on every third week it will be for a full week. I will get knocked around a bit.”
Lachie said plenty of family, friends and strangers had already donated to the cause, while Jacob noted he hadn’t had a hair cut for at least two years, but was looking forward to getting rid of his long curly locks.
Tim said he expected to lose his hair, however a group of about 15 school friends have pledged to shave their heads as well.
Tim’s mother Tania said she had been taken aback with the amount of support from the community.
“We appreciate it so much,” she said.
“It is absolutely overwhelming. I understand why people have donated. No family should ever have to through this.”
She said her son had a good prognosis and some of the money raised would go to the Cancer Council.
“Tim will get through this,” she said.
“Hopefully by this time next year Tim will be back on the football team.
“This stage is only a hiccup in his life.”
