That’s just one reason why Lockett is the ideal person to write an ode to the festival. Premiered at the 2014 event when he joined the Hog Stompin’ Zydegators, Lockett’s Folkie theme song was printed in the program for the 40th festival and got a few airings as Lockett again joined the Zydegators on stage.
“I always had a dream that one day I would sing a song at the Folkie, but I thought I would be 60 when that happened, so for it to happen in my 30s … it’s literally a dream come true," he said.
Lockett has taken his hometown pride further – along with fellow Port Fairy native Gus Franklin he is recording an album about the town’s history.
The record, due out in the middle of the year, recounts the history of Port Fairy and was partially funded by the Port Fairy Folk Festival and the State Government.
