Musicians played and danced their way through the crowds of people who stopped to admire the festivities.
The lights were created by Jyllie Jackson and her LightnUP crew who run the famed Lismore Lantern Parade, which has just celebrated 20 years.
The crew visited local primary schools, working with children who this week made more than 100 lanterns.
Festival patrons can visit the Family Folk Circus where Jude Stewart will help young ones and the young at heart make and decorate a lantern.
Members of the public can also participate in The Southern Lights parades on Saturday and Sunday.
Go to the CRAFTworx area on Saturday and Sunday from 10am to register for lantern making, or decorate a lantern on Saturday and Sunday from 3.30pm to 5.30pm.
The parades run nightly from dusk. On Saturday and Sunday night The Southern Lights will run from the Railway Stage and Fiddler’s Green into the arena.
