The Warrnambool club joined Australian National Drag Racing Association’s (ANDRA) promotion on Thursday outside Bunnings Warrnambool of the Portland competition but wants Warrnambool to some day enjoy the economic benefits that drag racing will deliver to Portland this weekend.
WDDRC secretary Angela Griffin said drag racing was not hoons trying to be legal but a big sport that generated hundreds of thousands of dollars each year for host towns.
She said the club hoped to generate that sort of turnover for Koroit and Warrnambool with its proposal to build a $1.2 million one eighth mile drag racing strip at the former Koroit racecourse. The proposal is before Moyne Shire Council.
In the meantime the club will on January 31 hold one of its three meetings a year at Warrnambool airport.
