Toy, Elf on the Shelf, is sent to children's homes to be Santa’s eyes and ears and the popular book has sold out in stores across Warrnambool.
Collins Booksellers employee Sarah Schietroma said the book and toy were growing in popularity.
"We just can't get enough in...we have a waiting list, it's just crazy," she said.
Originating in America, the phenomenon was created from The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition picture book. The book explains how Santa Claus knows who is naughty and nice through elves visiting children all the way until Christmas Eve.
"Every night the elf gets up to mischief, he might get into the sugar bowl or climb the Christmas tree, then the kids have to find him the next day," Miss Schietroma said.
