Prince Of Penzance and Dandino, who are trained at Weir's Warrnambool satellite stable, are on the cusp of gaining starts in the race that stops a nation.
The six-year-old Prince Of Penzance is currently ranked 22rd in the line of entry for the 24-horse field, while the imported stallion Dandino is listed as 27th.
Weir's Warrnambool satellite foreman Jarrod McLean said he was quietly confident Prince Of Penzance will gain a start but was hopeful Dandino would get a start too.
"It's all a out the attrition rate for the cup from here. We've got our fingers crossed that both horses will get a run,” he said.
“I reckon they will both work over 1600 metres at Terang but the final decision relating to their work will be made by Weiry.
"I think their final training session will be solid work – just to have them right for next Tuesday.
“They will do beach work at Warrnambool on Saturday, Sunday and Monday just to keep them ticking over."
Prince Of Penzance ran a great race to finish second in the Moonee Valley Cup last Saturday after setting the pace.
Dandino's last run resulted in a second placing in the Geelong Cup behind Almoonqith.
McLean said if Dandino misses a start in the Melbourne Cup he will run in the $300,000 Queens Cup at Flemington on November 7.
