Port Campbell police Senior Constable Scott Thompson said the 45-year-old farmer was using a ute to jump-start the mower about 3.30pm on Monday.
He said the farmer had leaned into the ute to start it. The ute was in gear and it jumped forward and pinned the man between the ute door and a shed pole, he said.
An ambulance was called but the man could not be revived.
WorkSafe and police attended and will investigate the incident. A report will be prepared for the Victorian Coroner.
Senior Constable Thompson said there were no suspicious circumstances.
"It was just a very unfortunate accident," he said.
