The group said the tragedy was a reminder to people about the importance of life jackets when boating.
Life Saving Victoria’s Lifesaving Operations Manager Greg Scott said the tragedy is also an important reminder to check the local weather warnings before taking part in any water activity.
“Water users should always check wave conditions and heights, as well as times for high and low tide. It’s important to be aware of the forecast wind conditions and expected changes,” he said.
“Life Saving Victoria is offering support to the Warrnambool volunteers involved in this incident, and is immensely proud of their efforts,” he said.
Warrnambool police senior sergeant Tania Barbary said boating was a pass time enjoyed by many Australian’s but it needed to be done safely.
“Each year there are deaths on the water, and many of these deaths are preventable,” she said.
