The group is calling for donations of wide-brimmed sunhats, hand fans and small tubes of sunscreen to give to clients along with practical information about staying safe in periods of extreme heat.
Community development co-ordinator Louise Serra said while using a cool face washer and drinking water were commonly known ways to keep cool, it shouldn’t be assumed everyone knew how to look after themselves.
“It’s so easy to leave an air conditioner on all day, but then a huge bill comes at the end of the month,” she said. “So we just want to help our clients with some easy ways to stay cool.”
She said fans cost only a couple of dollars and broad-brimmed hats were the preference, but caps were also welcome. Donations can be left at the drop-in centre in Koroit Street, beside the courthouse, between 9am and noon.
