AMONG the more comical lines on Warrnambool and District league grand final day came from Dennington coach Darcy Lewis when asked for his thoughts on teammate Alex Pye.

Pye won the Scotty Stewart Medal for best-afield as voted by the media after kicking six second-half goals in the 12.15 (87) to 12.7 (79) win against Merrivale at Reid Oval on Saturday.
His haul included the sealer – a 50-metre set shot from the boundary line at the 20-minute mark of the last quarter which will go down in league folklore.
Grayden Russell had put the Dogs two points up with a goal minutes earlier, the fifth lead change of the term. Pye extended the margin to eight points, where it remained until the siren.
“He’s a really funny footballer. He worries the hell out of supporters, he worries the hell out of me sometimes,” Lewis said post-match.
“He sits there in his clothes and doesn’t get dressed until about 10 to two and looks like he’s not interested.
“But as soon as he hits the ground, as soon as his foot touches that blade of grass it’s game on, it’s showtime for Alex. You’ve just got to get the ball in his hands, he does the rest from there.”
Pye said the Dogs’ motivation to end their 27-year premiership drought came back to the hundreds of hours Lewis’ family and dedicated volunteers had put into the club.
“We needed to win for Darcy and his family and all the long-time supporters,” he said.
