Ex-Rooster defender Matt Sully will line up for Southport in its elimination final against Sydney University on Sunday after the Sharks finished the home and away season sixth on percentage.
His old Hampden league teammate, Louis Herbert, was left to rue “what if” after his Gold Coast Suns placed seventh, also with an 8-10 win-loss record.
The AFL-listed Herbert produced his finest performance of the season in the Suns’ must-win final-round game, bagging five goals in a best-on-ground effort against Ainslie.
Herbert arrived at Gold Coast as a rookie and played three AFL matches in his first season.
But he spent the entire 2015 campaign in the seconds despite the Suns’ devastating injury list. He played 18 NEAFL matches – the most by any Sun.
Sully has played four matches for Southport after overcoming a knee injury which has marred his first season in Queensland.
