The movement has applied to the Victorian Electoral Commission to become the National Country Party, a moniker it held from 1975 until 1982 during the Peter Ross-Edwards years.
Mr Walsh said he was never satisfied with the Nationals badge and wanted a title linked to the party’s country heritage.
“I believe the title of the National Country Party would best reflect (our) goal, and reflect our proud 100-year history in Victoria,” the Mallee-region MP said.
The Country Party was established in 1920, became the National Country Party in 1975, then the National Party of Australia in 1982 and informally titled The Nationals in the mid 2000s.
State Agriculture Minister Jaala Pulford said the National Party had failed to represent regional Victoria for decades. “Slapping a coat of paint on an old ute won’t make it sparkle,” she said.
