The woman parked outside her own house in Garton Street, Princes Hill, at about 10pm on Saturday and was removing items from her car when a man approached her, police said.
The man grabbed her hand and attempted to steal her keys, police said.
The women, 43, struggled out of his clutches before a neighbour came to help her and chased the man off towards Macpherson Street.
The woman received only minor injuries in the incident.
"I screamed a lot, I really, really screamed. I've never screamed like that in my life," the woman, who declined to be identified, told Channel 10.
"I saw that he meant business. I knew that if he got the keys he was gone, and so was my daughter."
Detectives have released a composite image of the man they wish to speak to in relation to the attack, and have asked anyone with information to call Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
