An understrength Rangers side succumbed 3-1 to Sebastopol Vikings at St George’s Reserve on Sunday, a result which has put their top-two hopes in jeopardy.
Chol Ajak scored their only goal, opening the scoring from close range less than 10 minutes into the first half.
But Sebastopol levelled before the interval and added two more in the second half. They have two wins and a draw against Warrnambool this season.
Rangers coach Cameron Pyke was confident his side could turn the tables if the sides met in finals.
“There is that nagging feeling in the back of the mind, if we do come up against them (in finals) it could spell the end of us,” he said.
“But the first game we played against them we had bad chemistry, no one played a good game that day. And the second time we had a 2-2 draw and all respect to them but we should’ve won that game.
“The best thing about finals is it’s the best team on the day. I have confidence in our guys that when finals roll around we can put a good performance on the park.”
Warrnambool stayed second on the ladder despite the loss, with Vic Park suffering a shock loss to Castlemaine.
Meanwhile, the Rangers’ division one women’s side suffered their second loss of the season, going down 2-1 to North United. The defeat cut their lead at the top of the table to three points.
