The commonly-used maxim relates to how lifelong education should start at an early age and it’s a message not lost on Warrnambool’s Catholic community.
St Joseph’s Church staged a winter organ school for its junior scholarship students on Friday and Saturday with one of Australia’s leading tutors visiting Warrnambool especially for the occasion.
Suzuki method teacher David Clark worked with scholarship tutor Sonia Gellert at the Koroit Street church to teach pupils the finer points of organ playing.
Ms Gellert said the organ pupils range in age from eight to 12 and had been enthusiastic participants in the musical classes.
“We’ve mostly covered simple pieces like Mary had a Little Lamb but there are a number of ways any song can be played, no matter how simple,” she said.
Mr Clark said an “organ ramble” would be staged on Saturday with pupils visiting three other organs around the city to test out their skills on a range of equipment.
