Mount Gambier’s Caleb Perry, Ballarat pair Corey Haase and Bailey Holloway and Kyabram’s Jaimie Scapin are among more than 70 teenagers who will hit Warrnambool Golf Course on Monday and Tuesday.
Dennington young gun Joanna Flaherty, who will contest the tournament for the last time, is among the leading female chances.
Flaherty won the 2014 edition by seven shots with rounds of 86 and 81.
Warrnambool Golf Club manager Trevor Brown said he was pleased with the interest from young golfers across the state.
Entries have come from Bendigo, Ballarat, Geelong as well as the south-west. Many competitors are part of a regional sports academy.
“The main event is the Sungold Junior Open, which is 36 holes played over two days,” Brown said.
“It doubles up as the Western District Golf Association junior championship. We also have categories for nine holes and non-handicap events for beginner golfers.”
Brown said the course was in good condition leading into the biggest junior event on the calendar.
“It’s very good at the moment, it’s held up well and the forecast is looking good at this stage,” he said.
"I can remember a couple of years ago when we were pumping water off a couple of sections of the course over the weekend before we started. It’s looking fantastic this year.
“A lot of work has gone into the drainage over the last couple of years to improve the course.”
Port Fairy Golf Club will host the 18-hole Alec Calvert Junior Open on Sunday, offering those making the trip to the south-west another chance to swing their clubs.
