Set in the remote Dolpo region of Nepal, Himalaya tells the story of a rivalry between an ageing village chief and a younger village man as they lead competing yak caravans on a treacherous journey across the Himalayas to trade salt for grain to feed the village.
The screening will raise funds for the PR Open Heart Appeal, which is seeking around $20,000 for earthquake relief projects in Nepal.
“It is a beautifully shot film with breathtaking scenery, so hopefully we can get lots of people coming along,” event organiser Belinda Bennett said.
“Thanks to the support of the Corangamite Film Society we are able to provide all funds raised from the night to the appeal.”
The PR Open Heart Appeal is being led by former Camperdown man Mutki Timilsina, who moved to the region from Nepal several years ago. Also supporting the campaign is a group of local residents who have previously travelled to Nepal.
“Our goal is to raise enough funds to build a community centre in a remote part of Nepal,” Ms Bennett said.
“So far we have raised just over $10,000 thanks to great support from the local community, including over $3000 raised at a recent dinner in the Terang Hotel Bistro.”
The group plans further fund-raising events, including a curry night at Fishtails, Warrnambool, in August.
Himalaya will be screened at 7pm tomorrow at Theatre Royale. Tickets are $15 each, including supper, and will be available at the door. For more information please contact Belinda Bennett on 0419 847 449 or Graham Arkinstall on 0418 377 293.
