Specialising in rehabilitation medicine, the hospital has welcomed Cristina Manu into the fold.
Dr Manu was born in Romania and moved to Australia 10 years ago.
She studied at the University of Medicine in Bucharest in 2002 and went on to do further studies in molecular biology and stem-cell research.
When she arrived in Melbourne, she began specialising in rehabilitation and has worked at The Alfred hospital and St Vincent’s hospital.
Dr Manu said that initially she was interested in neurology, but after working in rehabilitation realised that it would provide a nice mix of medicine and having a family. “You get to see the patient from a different perspective,” she said.
She said that at St John of God she was able to see a wide variety of patients in orthopaedic, neurological, cardiac and chronic pain rehabilitation programs in both hospital and outpatient settings.
The hospital is working to make the transition from inpatient to outpatient rehabilitation easier.
Dr Manu said Warrnambool was fortunate to have the rehabilitation facilities, which includes a hydrotherapy pool. Acting CEO director of nursing Leanne McPherson said the hospital was lucky to have someone of Dr Manu’s experience and qualifications.
