Portland photographer and fisherman Bob McPherson said the whale was active, about 20 metres offshore, from about 3pm to 6pm.
“It moved around quite a bit,” he told The Standard. “It was quite active and had its tail out of the water.”
He said southern right whales were expected to arrive soon for the nursing season at Logans Beach in Warrnambool, as well as other coastal sites.
“Warrnambool is one of very few places that gets to see southern right calves.
“People are under the impression that Logans is the only place they have their young but that’s not true. Last year we had some young calves off Cape Bridgewater and there’s been the odd one off here over the past two or three years.”
On Tuesday four whales were seen at Fairhaven, off the Great Ocean Road.
